What is that thing in his mouth?
By S.G. Rainbolt
Question from Readers
Dear Publisher:
I finally picked up a copy of your Ozarks Local and was impressed by it's quality stories and it's layout (I'm a website administrator, so I notice things like that), we need a new face in our town.
But I was shocked to see as your mascot, in your "O" of the logo, a reporter with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth! I would expect that from a Marlboro ad. I hope I'm not assuming, but it looks like this is suppose to be a “family-oriented” paper. In my opinion it doesn't look good condoning such an additive habit. Is this a misunderstanding?

Dear UR:
We are just as surprised as you to have someone point that out! Be assured that our reporter, "Red," is tobacco-free.
Our staff believes he may have smoked years ago, though. Probably, to counter his stress and paranoia during and after the war.
Recently, I met with "Red" and asked, "How did you break the habit?" He told me, "Boss, it was many things. I thought about my family and how chewing on my pen was much healthier."
So, the little blur hanging out of his mouth is a pen top. Unfortunately, the same one he's being chewing on since he started in this biz. "Red" and Ozarks Local would never condone a behavior that is unwholesome to our readers or businesses that advertise with us, or thought by the community as an abhorrent habit.
